What does FAQ mean?

FAQ stands for "frequently asked questions".

What are the requirements for running Triton Administrator?

The requirements for running Triton Administrator are: Windows 95, 98, NT, ME, 2000, or XP Pentium Class 300MHz or higher 64MB RAM or higher 50MB Free HD space

What is the user friendliness of the system?

The easier a software program is to use the more it will promote people to use it, and with crew coming and going, this is essential. We have chosen an Outlook-like interface windows type format, which is a great start for the crew. User training is also very important and is built into the pricing. GCS maintains a long-term relationship with clients and is available for future training needs as new crew come on board.

What is the compatibility with a shore-based management company? We need a program for normal interface with the management company. Of prime importance is the synchronization with shore-based management for the ISM code. How would the shore-based company access and download files?

Data synchronization is built into the design of our software, expressly for the purpose of supporting ISM and other regulatory requirements.

How long does it take for a crew to learn how to use Triton Administrator?

Due to its design, there is a very rapid learning curve, and anyone with basic Windows skills can have it up and running and using it within minutes. Advanced features can be learned on the fly. Training is available for the more advanced features.

What training is available for crew and shore-based management?

We do charge for training, but it is at a very deep discount when purchased in conjunction with a complete system. GCS can provide a proposal that details costs for all equipment and services.

Will Quicken import into Triton?

It would be foolish to try and rewrite Quicken. Clients using Quicken for their ships accounts should continue to use this powerful accounting tool, and export data from Triton into their accounts. Triton accounting enhances Quicken by allowing each department to enter it's own receipts, and it's easier to track cash transfers and currency conversions through Triton.

What database does the program use?

Triton Administrator can be shipped with a SQL server database, and can adapt to any database you care to use. The software is packaged with MS Access as it's default database, and most yachts have a network that does not need a database that supports a high number of multiple users. (GCS is currently upgrading the software to a royalty-free SQL server).

Can the accounting retrieve current currency conversions from the Internet?

This is not necessary. The accounts are set up to work in the ship's currency, and the currency rate that is used when an amount is converted is the rate that should be entered. Using the latest currency rates would cause errors in your accounting, as they would not be the same as what you actually received on shore.

Does each department have a separate database? Why?

Data is kept on a single database, accessed by separate departments.

Does GCS provide assistance for inputting of data during the build?

Yes, we can provide for data entry at an additional cost. Ideally, the crew familiarizes themselves with the Triton program while building the database. However, GCS can create a proposal tailored to the amount and type of data your build requires and place a technician on-site for data entry.

Are system updates generated and released for free in the future? When new versions of the software come out are there additional costs for existing users?

System updates, version upgrades, and additional users are all provided at no additional cost while clients maintain a service contract.

We may have a requirement for approximately ten additional workstations. Are there additional costs involved for extra workstations to have the program?

No - If you have purchased the Unlimited Multi-User Local Network License, there is no additional fee. The price includes six months of free upgrades and technical support.

Yes -- The Single-user version is not networked and will need to be upgraded to the Multi-User Local Network License for additional workstations.

Are there any users that are currently using the program during a build?

Yes - Aussie Rules, Anson Bell, Perfect Prescription, Kisses, and Project Phoenix, to name a few.

What are the advantages to commissioning GCS to provide my Design Spec?

GCS has over 25 years of experience in designing and implementing computer networks. We understand the unique demands inherent in a shipboard LAN, and incorporate these elements into the design. We work closely with project managers, captains, and engineers to create a flexible, modular design with the highest rated hardware and software that meet budget, performance, and reliability requirements.

What is the monthly support fee for the software?

"I have to pay for bug fixes? " No. By paying a monthly service fee, we will track your usage and you are also entitled to free upgrades and data backups as long as you maintain the service contract. A service fee entitles you to telephone and email support without being charged an hourly fee.

Why do I need remote administration for my network?

By contracting GCS for Remote Administration (RA) the overall effect is saving money and decreasing cost of ownership of your shipboard LAN. Here's how: first and foremost, RA provides you a smooth operating system, with us monitoring your systems and notifying you of potential problems and repairing sudden breakdowns that often occur with any shipboard system. Further, RA allows us to set up a symbiotic relationship with your vessel, enabling GCS to perform repairs in a much faster response time than sending a technician to repair the system; and without a costly trip to the vessel, saving you time and money. (At this point you can look at it as sort of an insurance policy.) Finally, in effect you are getting a full time IT professional to manage your onboard LAN. If you were on land, you'd pay $70K a year for the salary of one IT specialist, who has no training or experience in the superyacht industry. If you're on land.

However, you're on the sea. GCS has 25 years experience in networking technology and administration at your disposal. By having GCS maintain Remote Administration, you have the same company with the same technicians, all over the world. What's the alternative? Either flying someone in to the boat, or paying a different technician (whoever's available) hourly to come out on site and fix the LAN each time it crashes. Each new technician has to relearn how your LAN is set up, and you have no guarantees of their expertise. Instead of leaving you with a load of expensive equipment that requires a lot of training and expertise for monitoring and maintenance, with GCS RA you get a worry free system that frees up your crew to perform their other duties.

My GCS Design Spec calls for two servers onboard. Why do we need two servers?

You don't. GCS recommends two servers for the following reasons: One is a file admin server, just handles information and data. The second server provides access to the Internet and your email and backups. The second server is not required to be as high in performance as the file server. They are separated to let the file server perform more efficiently (faster). Two servers allow redundancy to back up data in case of failure. The benefits gained by having an extra server outweigh the costs of the additional piece of equipment - however, GCS can tailor a solution to meet your demands and budget, and we can provide a single server to perform the functions you require.

Why backup my data on a shore-based server?

Backing up the LAN onshore is a security measure to safeguard against unforeseen events that could cause catastrophic system failure on the vessel. Also, it allows for access to that data when not on the vessel.

Our crew makes their own spreadsheets on Excel for scheduled maintenance and inventory, etc. Why do I need a data management system?

Uniform presentation of data. No matter who enters it, it is stored in the same manner.

Why is that important?

If you have a piece of software that does this, the system enforces data integrity and rules to data entry that cannot be controlled with the use of regular spreadsheets. A data management system reduces the possibility for human errors. Presentation of all reports are formatted the same way, regardless of who enters the data. With GCS data management systems, you only have to enter data one time, and then draw upon data to be collated more efficiently across all departments at the touch of a key. Using a data management system lets you access data when you need it, giving you time to make decisions based on that data, rather than spending time on figuring out HOW to shape and create your data.

Why should I have my documentation in electronic format?

GCS provides electronic documentation in an interactive format similar to a standard "Help" program. Pages are linked to the rest of the document and make looking up parts, procedures, and information fast and efficient. Most providers of electronic documentation will scan in a document, but do not connect the information for quick reference. Electronic documentation can save time and space on the boat by having manuals and documentation at the user's fingertips, and can be integrated into the Triton Admin system for reference.

Other points: Our Doc system can be updated by the user, you have the option of having electronic documentation available on the Internet if you use other GCS internet services, our electronic documentation allows you to collate research projects for future reference.

Will my satellite provider connect the LAN to the communications system?

No.
