A
one-time setup needs to be performed on the NAS3000 before using it for
creating users, managing users, assigning access privileges, managing Internet
access, or processing email.

Note: This
action is only required to control web access by User name from a particular
computer. If access is given by
computer, all users on that computer will have access.

Manage
Internet Connection allows selecting the desired active Internet
connection. If a broadband connection is
selected, Internet traffic will immediately be routed to this connection for
authorized users and computers. If a
dial up connection is selected, connection will dial on demand when an
authorized user or computer attempts access.
Dial up connections can also be connected immediately by pressing the Connect button.
1.
Select Internet from top menu
2.
Select Manage Internet Connection
from submenu on left
3.
Step 1: Enter NAS3000 user name
and password
4.
Step 2: Select desired connection
from drop down list. User will be
presented with only the connections which they are authorized to manage. See Account
Access for details.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If a dial up connection is
enabled, there is always potential for it to dial out. If access to the Internet is not needed,
always set desired connection to ALL
DISABLED or click Reset. It is up to the individuals responsible for
managing the internet connections to monitor the system and insure expensive
dial up connections are not left active for extended periods of time and
dialing erroneously.
1.
If a dial up connection was selected, connection details for the connection
will be displayed.
2.
Change location, Prefix, and Phone number, as needed.
3.
If changes are made to prefix, number, or location, system prompts if
the number for the location should be changed permanently and if new
location/number should be come the default for the selected connection.
4.
To connect immediately, click Connect
button
5.
To cancel or start over, click Reset
button

1.
To disconnect a connected dial up connection, click the Disconnect button.
2.
Disconnecting a connection will also cause all connections to be
disabled.

1.
Select Internet from top menu
2.
Select Account Access from
submenu on left
3.
Enter NAS3000 Username and Password when prompted

Note: Internet Explorer on client
computer must be set to use http://server
port
8080 as proxy server for access by user to have effect. See next section for details.

NAS3000
Users are integrated with the Windows 2003 Active Directory. Creating an NAS3000 user will create a
corresponding Windows 2003 user.
Likewise, creating a Windows 2003 user using the Server Management
console will create a NAS3000 user (though one with no privileges). Enhancements are still being made to the
NAS3000 user management features.
1.
Select Internet from top menu
2.
Select Manage Users from
submenu on left
3.
Enter NAS3000 Username and password, when prompted.

1.
Type First Name, Last Name, Email Address, and password for new user
(combination of First Name and Last Name will be used to create user name)
2.
Specify user privileges by checking appropriate boxes
3.
Click the Add button to create user
1.
Select user from User Name drop down list
2.

Mail can be processed both
on a scheduled and on an on demand basis.
When using a broadband or other full time connection (such as GPRS),
mail delivery is typically scheduled from once every 10 minutes to once an
hour. When a dial up connection is
being used, mail is typically processed on an on demand basis.
1.
Select Email from top menu
2.
Select Process Mail from
submenu on left
3.
Click Process Now button
4.
Message processing information will appear in Status Activity Log window
5.
Check Enable AutoRefresh and
click Refresh Activity Log button to
have log information be refreshed continuously.

When there is no active
Internet connection, scheduled download should be paused. When using dial-up connections, especially
expensive dial-up connections, it may also be desired to pause scheduled
download and only download email on demand.

When
a crew member will not be onboard for an extended period and will be downloading
email to a notebook computer that will be reconnected to the ship’s network
upon return, it may be desired to disable mail download for that user. This will prevent duplicate messages from
appearing in the user’s mailbox after reconnecting their notebook computer to
the ship’s network.
